FAST Activities - Encouraging Parental Involvement in Schools and Centers

The best predictor of a student's achievement in school is parent involvement. FAST is committed to involving parents at multiple levels: with their children, with one another, with their child's school or center, and with the community. These relationships strengthen parents, families, and the community as a whole.

Parents become more closely affiliated with the school or center by spending time in the building and getting to know the staff, teachers, counselors, social workers, directors, and principals. As they become more familiar and comfortable with the school, they feel more confident and capable of contributing to the school.

After just two months with the FAST program, previously withdrawn parents become more positive and trusting in their children's education. Seventy percent of the parents report getting more involved in their child's school or center. They attend functions, become classroom volunteers, and share in the decision making process of their children's school or center. School and center attitudes toward parents also become more positive. Through respect and support, personnel see a change in parents, and they themselves become more eager and respectful partners with parents. This change of attitude toward education leads parents to pursue their own educational and career goals as well.
